Introduction

This chapter introduces the foundational concepts of the Production-Oriented Approach (POA), developed by Wen and her research team (Foreign Language Teaching and Research 47:547–558, 2015; Chinese Teaching in the World 32:387–400, 2018), which aims to enhance foreign language teaching and learning in East Asian contexts such as China, Japan, and South Korea. The chapter traces the POA’s evolution, highlighting its adaptability and continuous improvement through classroom feedback and theoretical advancements. Positioned within the broader challenges of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching, the chapter provides an overview of the specific difficulties faced in East Asian educational settings.
