Filtration is the process by which particles are removed from streams of fluid or gas by a semi-permeable membrane. Various types of filter play an important role in anaesthesia and critical care. Examples of commonly encountered filters include breathing system filters, epidural filters, IV infusion filters, blood filters and filter needles.
