Proximity Tourism as a Sustainable and Resilient Strategy: Building Back Better for Local Communities and Destinations

An increased awareness of climate change, the environmental crisis and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to an increasing attention towards proximity tourism as a strategy for a sustainable recovery of tourism destinations. However, despite the relevance of the topic, the existing literature in tourism and leisure studies on proximity tourism is still scarce (Salmela et al., 2021). In this chapter, we explore a case of proximity tourism that positively contributed to the sustainable development of a destination during a time of crisis.
