Semiclassical Treatment of the Dielectric Function

The general expression for the linear polarizability of a quantum system with discrete energy levels is derived. The calculation is performed by means of the density matrix formalism in the interaction picture. As in the classical treatment, the linear polarizability turns out to be complex and frequency dependent.
