Smart Materials for Biomedical Application

In clinical practice, bone defects, often associated with infections or other bone diseases, present substantial challenges. Several implantable biomaterials have demonstrated potential in bone therapy and regeneration, aiding in the repair, replacement, or restoration of both hard and soft tissues. Nevertheless, the presence of residual tumors or severe infections within the original pathological microenvironment of bone defects can impede effective bone regeneration. Consequently, there is a critical demand for the development of versatile biomaterials capable of integrating both bone therapy and regeneration functions. While traditional smart biomaterials respond to stimuli, the evolving field calls for a fresh perspective on biomaterial intelligence. This work delves into the latest breakthroughs and practical applications of intelligent biomaterials in the restoration and regeneration of hard tissues, all while highlighting the challenges associated with developing new engineered biomaterials.
