Comorbidities Often Associated with Brain Damage in Hypertension: Dyslipidaemia

摘要

Lipoprotein levels and function share a direct and indirect linkage with brain function, through several ways. Thus, brain homeostasis may alter when lipid or lipoprotein levels are increased or are underproducted. Nowadays, it is well known that atherosclerosis and formation of atheroma plaques represent the major and most recognized mechanism of stroke; however, dyslipidaemia can induce or aggravate stroke also through other mechanisms. In the following chapter, we discuss the possible mechanisms through which dyslipidaemia can affect brain function and homeostasis, leading to brain deterioration and damage.
