From 1936 onwards, with the colonial war being waged in Ethiopia, the first signals of biological racism began to appear on the Italian cultural scene, with regard to the danger of the meticciato (mestizaje). Meanwhile, fascist Italy was building closer ties with Nazi Germany. The visit of Goebbels and Hitler to Italy in September 1936 and May 1938, respectively, symbolically sealed this special relationship, sanctioned the following autumn by the signing of a treaty of friendship known as the Rome–Berlin Axis. However, the question of race regarding Jews, and in general anti-Jewish racism, remained in the background until the end of 1937.
