Mountains as Water Towers

摘要

In the face of profound hydrometeorological transformations caused by anthropogenic climate warming, understanding the fate of water stored in mountains is crucial to estimate future freshwater availability. While the technical language typically used in geosciences is effective within scientific circles, it often fails to communicate with local wisdom and experiences. Analogies and metaphors serve as powerful tools to bridge this gap and convey complex ideas to a broader audience. The analogy of “Mountains as Water Towers” has emerged as a de-facto definition of mountains’ role in the surface water cycle. It connects the function of mountainous areas as water storage and distributor, to engineered water towers erected nearby inhabited areas for the same purpose. This analogy captures the multifaceted role of mountains, highlighting their continuous role in connecting landscapes vertically through water flow and as conduits of socio-ecological interactions, underscoring their significance in the Earth’s water cycle. More so, mountains as water towers also become “watchtowers,” as they provide panoramic views of the landscape that enable us to monitor hydrological changes via scientific instrumentation and monitoring. Therefore, by using this analogy, we gain insight into the challenges of understanding and managing these dynamic environments and the significance of mountains in a changing world.
