Mountain Craftscapes

The term mountain craftscape highlights the creative and productive dimension of mountain landscapes from a regenerative perspective, elucidating the crucial role that local mountain craftspeople and their communities have for mountainscape configuration. In this chapter, I discuss the controversial concept of craft, and the connections between crafts, local technologies, and landscapes are analyzed, while exploring how livelihoods and artistic manifestations of symbolic and pragmatic realities have been innovated and experimented in the past, also constantly evolving to keep dwelling the mountains. The term mountain craftscape is proposed to contribute ideas for overcoming extractivistic notions of mountains and supporting mountain communities engaged in reciprocal restoration and biocultural conservation through their daily practices and livelihoods.
