An Introductory Cautionary Note on Mountain Terminology

The importance of mountain cognition is highlighted from ontological, semiotic, and epistemic angles, based on the affirmation of scientific terminology that is currently utilized in the training of mountain geographers and other professionals dealing with mountainscape research and development. We offer a view of the standards used in traditional mountain geography, as well as the newly coined terms appertaining to the transdisciplinary mountain science of montology. By analyzing the colonial parlance about mountains, we assumed the “decolonial turn” to give way to alternative and complementary understandings about mountainscapes from not only Western, but also Eastern and Global South's scientific approaches of a fresher framework of the corpus of mountain studies with montology.
