Lymphatic System in the Liver

The liver’s lymphatic system is crucial for fluid regulation, immune function, and lipid handling, playing a significant but often understated role in liver health and disease. Its dysfunction is linked to major liver conditions such as cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This chapter focuses on the hepatic lymphatic system’s roles, its changes during liver diseases, and the emerging therapeutic opportunities targeting this system. Research has shown that the hepatic lymphatic network’s alterations contribute to disease progression by exacerbating inflammation and facilitating cancer metastasis. Understanding the mechanisms of lymphangiogenesis and lymphatic function in the liver opens new doors for disease management. Therapeutic approaches that regulate these processes offer the potential for controlling fibrosis, reducing inflammation, and preventing the spread of cancer. Recent advancements underscore the therapeutic promise of modulating the lymphatic system to treat liver diseases. Targeting the pathways that govern lymphatic vessel formation and function can revolutionize treatment strategies for liver conditions, offering hope for improved outcomes.
