Biomaterials for Neurotrauma Intervention

摘要

Neurotrauma and traumatic brain injuries include damage to neurological tissue, which can lead to cognitive impairment and reduced neural function. The lymphatic system, through its role in the clearance of neurotoxic proteins, autoimmune cell infiltration, and the transmission of pro-inflammatory signals, participates in the pathogenesis of a variety of neurological disorders, including neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory diseases and traumatic injury. Neurotrauma can be the result of a diverse set of causes. Some causes can be localized, meaning that they are limited to certain spatial segments of the brain structure. Other causes can be global, meaning that it affects, in universal terms, the entirety or near-entirety of the brain structure. Neurotrauma can be classified as the result of damage to the brain structure. A focus should be placed on the role of lymphatics in neurotrauma, as there are obvious mechanisms of action that affect the ability of the brain to recover. In terms of targeting drug delivery, the current mechanisms available have been supplanted by modern methods that allow the user to exploit the blood-brain barrier’s own mechanism of action against itself. This relates to the advancement of biomaterials, which have a long history and robust set of applications. Concerning neurotrauma, new biomaterials are related to the advancement of nanoparticle research, which can cross the blood-brain barrier. Future research should focus on the need to increase the specificity and targeting capability of the delivery method.
