Online Education
摘要
The explosive growth of the Internet and of the overall volume of medical knowledge have led to fundamental changes in how we learn and teach medicine. Online (or Web-based or Internet-based) learning is now a standard element in education at all levels and in all professions. Online education provides opportunities for both synchronous and asynchronous learning through a variety of formats, allows for educators to standardize their curricular offerings and deliver them at scale, and permits learners to individualize their progression through material. These features are especially appealing for education in the complex and clinically demanding setting of the pediatric intensive care unit. We provide a pragmatic approach to the systematic implementation of online education in the intensive care unit, grounded in Kern’s six step approach to curriculum development. We also briefly review the state of evidence supporting the online approach to medical education, emphasizing the importance of viewing online education as a tool or means to achieve learning goals.
