Management of Seizures and Refractory Status Epilepticus in Critically Ill Children
摘要
Status epilepticus (SE) is the most common neurological emergency requiring admission to intensive care. The majority of SE episodes terminate after the first-line therapy and remaining with the second-line therapy; however, a small proportion of children develop refractory or super-refractory status epilepticus which poses a threat to life as well as long-term morbidity in those who survive. Early aggressive control of SE is warranted for the best patient outcomes focussing on using anti-seizure medications as per well-established international algorithms while minimising systemic complications. This chapter outlines the comprehensive definitions, pathophysiology, investigations, and management principles in dealing with SE in children. There is further discussion on seizures and SE in children admitted to critical care with acute neurologic diagnosis.
