The current approach to respiratory failure management in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) favors less-invasive support. The use of heated and humidified mixtures of air and oxygen through high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) and recourse to noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is becoming more and more popular these last decades. However, the highest level of evidence in children is still scarce, so most of the recommendations are mainly based on expert opinions. The authors will guide the readers in the NIV section following a structured pathway using the mnemonics of the acronym I.C.E.M.A.N.
