Parasites Infecting the Musculoskeletal System

  • Khaled ElShewy

摘要

The following parasites could affect the musculoskeletal system: Trichinella spiralis (encysted larvae), Sarcocystis (sarcocysts), Taenia solium (cysticercosis), Toxoplasma (cystic lesions), and Echinococcus granulosus (bone hydatid cysts). Almost all parasitic infections of the muscles result in cystic muscle lesions associated with parasitic myositis. Parasitic myositis is often diffuse or multifocal, and it is associated with muscle pain, tenderness on movement or palpation, swellings and/or weakness, and painless calcified muscle swellings.
