Avoiding the Gaijin Ghetto: Localizing Pro-Tokyoites

This chapter examines a subset of transnational professionals in Tokyo who consciously avoid living in expatriate-dominated areas, respectively the previously introduced “gaijin ghetto,” seeking a more localized experience. These individuals, termed “Pro-Tokyoites,” opt for neighborhoods that offer a blend of Japanese authenticity and yet also high socio-economic standards. The chapter explores their socio-spatial patterns and attitudes, highlighting their deliberate efforts to integrate into or at least approach local Japanese society while maintaining their global lifestyle. It also discusses the role of different factors, such as language skills, having a Japanese spouse or other everyday socio-spatial patterns, which influence the dynamic between maintaining connections with the expatriate community and engaging with the local Japanese society. This chapter offers insight into the nuanced ways transnational professionals navigate their identity and social spaces in a global city like Tokyo.
