Access to training in small bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) is variable and is not always included within core specialist training programmes. In contrast to training in standard endoscopy which focuses predominantly on technical competence, SBCE requires a more cognitive skill set based on observation and interpretation of significant findings from computer images. Small bowel endoscopy core curricula have been published by several national and international societies. Existing e-learning options for SBCE have been accomplished by interactive webinar-based online training developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Assessment of competency is often based on minimum numbers of supervised procedures in addition to the completion of short courses or during fellowship training. In the UK, direct observation of procedural skills is an established method for SBCE as part of a structured accreditation pathway. Training courses and e-learning modules have also been developed for colon capsule endoscopy. Non-physician reader extender roles are now widely accepted as pre-readers. In the absence of dedicated training, reader extenders should undergo the same training processes as physician readers up to the level of competence required for practice.
