The major consequence of portal hypertension is bleeding, particularly from esophageal varices. Nevertheless, well-known entities, such as portal hypertensive gastropathy and portal hypertensive colopathy, are also a source of bleeding in these patients. With the advent of capsule endoscopy, lesions have also been described in the small bowel in the context of an entity called portal hypertensive enteropathy. The findings, which are detected in 60–70% of the patients, include vascular lesions and abnormalities resembling mucosal inflammation. The clinical implications of these findings are not consensual.
