Video capsule endoscopy is most commonly performed to investigate the small bowel in patients with suspected gastrointestinal bleeding or Crohn’s disease. Improvements in imaging and battery technology have resulted in capsules with dual imagers and a wide field of view capable of imaging the entire colon in patients with suspected colorectal neoplasia. In patients with Crohn’s disease, such devices can also assess disease activity in both small and large bowel. Capsule endoscopes with magnetic inclusions, steered by a robot-controlled platform, can examine a water-filled stomach in real time. The role of capsule endoscopy is being expanded to triaging patients with suspected gastrointestinal bleeding in the emergency department.
