Setting the Scene: Disappearances during the Troubles

Whilst the violence in Ireland linked to Irish self-determination and opposition to British rule on the island date back centuries, its most recent manifestation, known as The Troubles, is generally considered to have begun in 1969 with a marked rise in political and sectarian tensions and a sudden explosion in inter-community violence. This chapter is not intended to present even a partial history of the Troubles as that would require multiple volumes. However, in order to fully appreciate the significance and impact of disappearances in Northern Ireland, some context needs to be provided to set the scene. A short analysis of The Troubles is presented here as it relates to disappearances in Northern Ireland.
