Chile 1960: When the Earth Rings Like a Bell
摘要
On 22 May 1960, Chile was shaken by the largest earthquake ever recorded, with a magnitude of 9.5. The earthquake caused widespread destruction and triggered massive tsunami that devastated Chile’s coastline, killed people in Hawaii, Philippines and also in Japan, more than 16 000 km from the epicentre. The earthquake made the Earth “ring like a bell”. The event caused a huge social and political turmoil in an already politically unstable country. This giant earthquake also raised the question about what the largest possible earthquake on the Earth might be.
