San Francisco 1906: USA vs. Earthquakes

Earthquakes were relatively common in California. Between 1836 and 1906, up to 16 earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 6 occurred around San Francisco. Earthquakes were essentially viewed as annoying and inconvenient, but not dangerous. This was until the Great California Earthquake on 18 April 1906 on the San Andreas Fault, just a few kilometres from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The earthquake changed the understanding of earthquakes and the attitude to seismic hazard.
