摘要

The journey from the naive views of Greek philosophers to the birth of modern seismology at the beginning of the twentieth century was long and challenging. It was easier to observe planets, moons, and stars in the universe than to investigate what is hidden sufficiently deep inside the Earth. The secrets of the Earth’s interior are intricately encoded in seismic waves and other physical phenomena at the Earth’s surface. This chapter tells a fascinating story of human effort to develop sensitive seismometers capable to faithfully capture the earthquake motion.
