An Optimistic Ending: Seismometers on the Moon and Mars
摘要
Major earthquakes have indeed been tragic challenges to humanity. The devastating events of Lisbon, San Francisco, Chile, Mexico, Indonesia, Japan, and Turkey brought destruction and tragedy, but also new insights into the processes inside the Earth. They have often led to important decisions in favour of protecting people and buildings. Seismologists found out how seismic waves can be used to explore the interiors of the Moon and Mars. The Apollo and InSight missions made it possible to record moonquakes and marsquakes and discover much about the internal structures and processes inside the Moon and Mars. This is very important for research into the evolution of planets, including the Earth.
