Resilience Schemes for Fast Recovery in Packet-Switched Communication Systems

This chapter discusses the properties of resilience mechanisms in packet-switched networks that are necessary to reduce the long convergence time experienced in default configurations in these systems. In this context, it first analyzes the properties of the spanning tree protocol (STP) characteristic of Layer-2 Ethernet networks and investigates its major variants aimed at ensuring fast recovery of affected spanning trees. Next, it explains the properties of the selected Layer-3 fast recovery mechanisms in IP and IP-MPLS networks.
