MiSIS: An HL7 FHIR Middleware for Healthcare Information Systems

Several e-Health and m-Health technological solutions are increasingly supporting Healthcare services. In this context, Electronic Health Records (EHR) deal with data of different types, which, if integrated, can be of great value for the patient’s health care. However, data heterogeneity is a factor that makes this integration difficult, and middleware appears as an option as a solution to this problem. The basic definition of middleware is a software layer that abstracts development details and encourages integration between solutions. This work describes the requirements and implements a middleware for healthcare systems based on HL7 FHIR, an open development standard that enables interoperability between healthcare solutions. As a result, we present a proof of concept that integrates data from 5 different health systems and makes the integrated data available using the HL7 FHIR standard.
