This chapter traces the rise of female Muslim religious leaders and explores their visions and initiatives for the future of Islam. It starts with a survey of female leaders in Islamic education over the past several centuries. Then it explores the results of a vast increase of women bearing university degrees in Islamic theology and law. It considers the visions or proposals these women bring for an Islam that honors justice and equality as fundamental values. The chapter presents the life work of several activists for the reform of Islamic laws, such as Monir Amadi QomiAmadi Qomi, Monir or Ziba Mir-Hosseini. It surveys the role of Iranian women in a global movement for legaldivorceefforts for legal reform equality in the Muslim family.
