When Bollywood Builds Dubai Filmic Imagery: Renewed Visions of the Arabian Peninsula
摘要
Since the groundbreaking Indian film Sangam in 1964, Bollywood has woven urban fantasies into its narratives, transporting audiences to glamorous locales worldwide. While cities like Paris and New York have been celebrated in celluloid, Dubai remained on the periphery of Bollywood’s cinematic imagination. However, the grandeur of Dubai has increasingly captivated Bollywood, shaping the Emirate’s visual narrative. From outdated depictions to modern reinterpretations, Bollywood’s portrayal of Dubai has evolved. Initially entangled with mafia narratives and Orientalist imagery, recent films like Welcome Back (2015) have transformed Dubai into a backdrop for comedic twists, reflecting a shift toward a more positive portrayal. This transformation aligns with Bollywood’s commercial interests and its integration within Dubai, presenting the city-state as a tourist haven. Through visually captivating sequences, Bollywood showcases Dubai’s iconic landmarks, forging a symbiotic relationship between Bombay and Dubai, with Bollywood serving as a powerful ambassador for the Emirate on the global stage.
