Shubra Palace’s Hero: Badi‘ Sobhi, The Distributor That Created Bollywood’s Golden Age

This chapter explores the transformative role of Badi‘ Sobhi, an Egyptian distributor, in shaping Bollywood’s Golden Age in Egypt during the late twentieth century. Despite governmental restrictions on Hindi films post-1970, Sobhi navigated legal obstacles to satisfy the growing demand for Indian films. Amidst geopolitical shifts and state policies aimed at safeguarding the national film industry, Sobhi strategically circumvented regulations, establishing a robust distribution network across Cairo and Alexandria. His efforts culminated in creating a thriving market for Bollywood films in Egypt, particularly in the Shubra district. However, Sobhi’s success faced challenges in the 2000s, including escalating film prices and changing audience preferences influenced by the emergence of multiplexes and Hollywood blockbusters. Despite Sobhi’s efforts, the once-thriving era of Bollywood in Egypt gradually waned, reflecting broader societal transformations and urban developments.
