Artificial Intelligence Integration in Translingual Language Learning: Enhancing Communication and Digital Literacy

This chapter discusses the role Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays in the context of translingual language learning. It begins with reviewing the concepts of artificial and machine intelligence and their relation to human intelligence. The chapter goes on to argue that artificial intelligence and digital tools can act as cognitive prostheses, expanding and altering our human capabilities in education research and offering new tools and processes of investigation. To support this case, the chapter draws on a recent research project addressing the value of artificial intelligence in language learning practice and the ways in which it can support human-to-human interaction and translingual communication in contemporary globalized society. The project explored human-technology interaction as an integral part of the contemporary communicative repertoire where the effective use of digital tools is encouraged to facilitate multimodal meaning-making capacities in our everyday lives. This research project provides an example of using artificial intelligence to support translingual language learning and illustrates the opportunities provided by digital media to enhance contemporary learning and communication.
