Using ChatGPT to Assist Writers with Planning Writing Tasks in an EFL Classroom

This chapter examines the role of ChatGPT in supporting English as a foreign language (EFL) students with organizing writing tasks. The empirical study focuses on integrating AI into classroom practice, emphasizing metacognition and critical thinking. More specifically, we delineate the cognitive processes of writing and present a structured study where EFL students engage with ChatGPT as they complete writing tasks. Methods include observing students’ interactions with ChatGPT, analyzing their prompt creation, and evaluating their engagement through questionnaires. As a result, we identify key factors affecting prompt generation and offer tailored prompts and models to enhance learner engagement with ChatGPT during the writing planning phase. Finally, we provide a comprehensive look at the potential of AI to revolutionize educational practices in writing.
