The North-South disparities in terms of economic development in Italy are also reflected in the inequalities in educational opportunities. Southern regions, already plagued by significant school dropout rates, experience significant mobility student outflows at the university level. In this context, this work aims to study the interplay of sociodemographic factors and others related to previous educational attainment on the mobility choices of southern graduates. In particular, the study focuses on two possible choices: enrollment in a southern university or a central-northern one. The results highlight how mobility choices are strongly differentiated based on the interaction of social class and the student’s previous educational attainment.

摘要

The North-South disparities in terms of economic development in Italy are also reflected in the inequalities in educational opportunities. Southern regions, already plagued by significant school dropout rates, experience significant mobility student outflows at the university level. In this context, this work aims to study the interplay of sociodemographic factors and others related to previous educational attainment on the mobility choices of southern graduates. In particular, the study focuses on two possible choices: enrollment in a southern university or a central-northern one. The results highlight how mobility choices are strongly differentiated based on the interaction of social class and the student’s previous educational attainment.
