Eco-Sustainable Tourism in Europe, an Analysis with Multilevel Models
摘要
The objective of this paper is to understand which characteristics influence the decisions, among European citizens, to adopt eco-sustainable behavior during their holidays. The data comes from the Flash Eurobarometer 499 survey, carried out in 2021 with the participation of 25,714 European citizens from the 27 Member States. The questionnaire includes ten questions about participants’ intentions to implement various eco-sustainable actions. Citizens’ preparedness to change habits depends not only on their sociodemographic characteristics, but also on their preferences in terms of types of holidays, which is a new result. Still there is a lot of heterogeneity between countries. Given the hierarchical nature of the data, multilevel logistics models are used to take in account both the variability between citizens and the between Member States. The use of such models made it possible to consider also the social context and the specific culture of each country, which influence the willingness of European citizens to adopt sustainable behavior during holidays. This approach identified which countries show greater sensitivity to the issue, as well as a greater propensity of their citizens to change their own habits
