Using of Phytogenic Waste Sorbents for Purification of Urban Surface Wastewater from Aluminum

It is no secret that the condition of various ecological systems in the present-day world leaves much room for improvement. In addition to food issues, the growing population on our planet causes a number ecological problems, including contamination of the environment with different anthropogenic pollutants generated as a result of the human activity. There is a major problem with obtaining of clean potable water due to the pollution of water bodies, and the pollution processes have not ceased to this day. Among such factors is the polluted surface wastewater from urban territories that enters water reservoirs. Running over the impervious urban surfaces this wastewater collects all the pollutants along its way and transports these to a water body. Aluminum is one of such pollutants. After entering the human body, this microelement causes negative effects and leads to various diseases. In order to prevent this substance’s further entering water bodies, we propose to use sorption, and phytogenic production waste—as sorbent. This is the easiest, most effective and relatively cheap approach to treatment of water mediums. This article presents a comprehensive study of the possibility of using four types of phytogenic waste: hemp hulls; carbonized straw; carbonized walnut shells; and granulated buckwheat husks—as sorbents for purification of urban surface wastewater from aluminum. The composition of the materials has been analyzed, and microanalysis using a JEOL JSM-6460 LV scanning electron microscope has been performed. The sorption capacity of the potential sorbents in various conditions has been studied.
