Solving Some Environmental Problems Through Restoration, Plantation Building, and Recreational Woodland Management for the All-Around Sustainable Development of the Far Eastern Region of Russia

This article presents the results of multi-year research on solving some of the environmental problems in the mining territories of the Far Eastern Federal District (FEFD) by restoration, plantation building, and recreational woodland management for the sustainable development of the region. The rapid growth of forest and mining production, associated with forest cutting for the timber industry and gold mining in the past century, caused significant damage and environmental pollution leading to an environmental crisis that threatened not only human civilization but also the entire biosphere. However, identifying these trends did not require immediate action at the time, but now, according to N.V. Vasilyev et al. it is vital to realign the development strategies of the society and the region to shift the focus from immediate profits to long-term human development. Therefore, the goal of this research is to develop comprehensive proposals to reduce or eliminate the negative environmental impacts of the lands disturbed in the past century within placer gold mines to facilitate the all-around sustainable development of the region. The research focuses on forest ecosystems, technology, restored and unrestored plots, deforested areas, plantation forestry, and recreational woodland management. The geoenvironmental assessment of the region in question using the remote sensing of Earth, physical and chemical methods, and bioremediation helped define the current environmental situation in the region as critical. The authors made suggestions to solve some environmental problems. Their innovative nature is confirmed by the patents of the Russian Federation.
