Mammuthus meridionalis of the Late Villafranchian Site of Senèze (Domeyrat, Haute-Loire, Central France)

The fossiliferous site of Senèze has yielded 36 remains of the elephantid[aut]Elephantidae, elephantid Mammuthus meridionalis(also ) meridionalis, all but one found during the old excavations but never studied in detail nor published. The best preserved specimens are a cranium, two mandibles with their teeth, two isolated teeth and some limb bones. The subspecies is known in Western EuropeEurope from the middle (biozone MNQ 17) to the late (biozone MNQ 18) Villafranchian, and its occurrence helps to date the site to the late VillafranchianLate Villafranchian, see villafranchian, late. The presence of the Southern mammoth is a clear indication of a wooded savanna under a temperate or warm climate.
