The Bovidae (Mammalia, Cetartiodactyla) from Senèze

摘要

The new field research at Senèze has yielded seven incomplete remains belonging to bovids, but there are hundreds from previous work. Since the last century, eight species have been described from the locality. A revision was undertaken of Gazellospira torticornis, Procamptoceras brivatense[aut]Procamptocerasbrivatense, Gallogoral meneghinii, Pliotragus ardeus[aut]Pliotragusardeus, Megalovis latifrons[aut]Megalovislatifrons and Ovis sp[aut]Ovissp., which are represented by relatively abundant remains. A comparison with taxa from other localities in the Massif CentralMassif Central and across EuropeEurope has allowed the detection of a number of mistakes in the specific attribution of some remains and to discover new material. Today eleven species are identified at Senèze: G. torticornis, P. brivatense, cf. Hemitragus spcf. sp., G. meneghinii, P. ardeus, M. latifrons, Ovis claudiusguerini[aut]Ovisclaudiusguerini nov. sp., Leptobos etruscus, L. furtivus, BisonEobisonBison (Eobison) sp. and Bovidae indet[aut]Bovidaeindet.. Of these, one is newly named here and two others (cf. Hemitragus sp. and Bovidae indet.) are new for the site. A fourth taxon, Bison (Eobison) spsp., is known from a single specimen donated to the team and collected from an unknown horizon; it is younger than the other species and must date from the end of the Early PleistoceneEarly Pleistocene. Morphological variability is observed in samples of Pliotragus, Gallogoral and Megalovis, which suggests evolutionary change in these species through time. This could imply a mixing of the species and possibly indicate more than one fossiliferous level. Unfortunately, there are no details concerning the stratigraphical position of the material from previous field research in the maarMaar.
