Fuseli’s Bodies in Agony

After traveling in Germany and relocating to London in 1764, the Swiss-born Johann Heinrich Füssli set off to Rome for a sojourn that lasted from 1770 until 1778. During this period, he became known as Henry FuseliFuseli, Henry and, most prominently, as “a poet and a painter.” Fascinated by the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel, FuseliFuseli, Henry cultivated his passion for MichelangeloMichelangelo, approaching Dante’s work for the first time as an artist.
