Immersion Performance of Capsaicin Natural Antifouling Coating, Coated on Composite Fibreglass Marine Structures

The most successful antifouling (AF) paint which is tributyltin has been banned since 2008 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). A new non-toxic and eco-friendly AF system is needed. In this project, a new AF paint was prepared with Capsaicin as a natural AF additive. Capsaicin is well known in the pharmaceutical field to be good antimicrobial and environmentally friendly. Fibreglass panels with various percentages of Capsaicin were mixed in a rosin-modified base. The immersion performance of Capsaicin natural AF additives was conducted, and the percentage of weight change and marine growth was recorded. The increasing ratio of Capsaicin shows a decrease in the percentage of marine growth on fibreglass surfaces. The percentage of 6 and 8 wt% of Capsaicin additives has the lowest percentage of marine growth and weight change after being immersed in seawater. The regression analysis shows that uncoated obtained the highest R2 value due to no AF protection mechanisms. The regression analysis also supports the finding that the optimum ratios of Capsaicin were in samples 6 and 8 wt% with the lowest R2 due to the inhibited marine growth mechanism by Capsaicin.
