Seismic Analysis of Tun Mustapha Residential College of UMS and Staff Quarters of Desa Wawasan Tambunan Secondary School

摘要

An earthquake is defined as a rapid movement of the earth’s surface, which caused the plate tectonic boundaries to shake violently. Earthquakes had caused various damages, which had led major impact on humans in many ways: finances, safety, and health. Most existing buildings in Sabah were designed under British Standards in which the earthquake element was not taken into consideration. Hence, this research aimed to investigate the performance of two existing buildings in Sabah when subjected to seismic loads. The buildings were Tun Mustapha Residential College of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah and Staff Quarters of Desa Wawasan Tambunan Secondary School. In the simulation, three peak ground acceleration (PGA) values were employed including 0.145 g, 0.097 g, and 0.048 g. First, the structural deformation of the buildings was analysed using the PROTA software. Then, the safety status of the building was examined using standard FEMA 356. It was found that the displacement of the buildings in the x- and y-axis increased as the storey height and PGA values increased. Based on the results, it can be concluded that both buildings were classified as immediate occupancy (IO) which means the buildings are safe to be used.
