Postoperative Measures to Optimize Early Return of Erectile Function and Urinary Continence

Post-robotic prostatectomy (RALP) erectile dysfunction (ED) and urinary incontinence (UI) are devastating side effects that significantly affect quality of life. There are numerous postoperative techniques described in literature and performed in practice to optimize early return of erectile function and continence after surgery. For ED these techniques include group therapy, pelvic floor muscle therapy, oral and intracavernosal or intraurethral erectogenic agents, and vacuum erection devices hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Multimodal management of post-RALP ED has also become increasingly common. For early improvement in UI, there are fewer options available, as most cases of significant incontinence require surgical treatment. Pelvic floor muscle therapy with or without adjunctive procedures represents the primary measure to optimize urinary continence post-RALP.
