Preventing International Conflict: Kant

Although his overall characterisation of the international state of nature accords with that of Hobbes, Kant presents a distinct solution to the problem. He thinks that we will arrive at the end of history when there is perpetual peace between states. This chapter examines Kant’s rationale behind this assertion and explores his proposed approach to achieving such an outcome. While there are parallels between Kant’s perspective and that of the Abbé de Saint-Pierre, there are also notable differences which complicates the interpretation of Kant’s solution. Consequently, the many alternative interpretations will be explored and assessed.
