The State of Nature Analogy

When social contract theories are applied to the international domain an analogy can be drawn between the situation individuals are confronted with in the interpersonal state of nature and the situation states find themselves in the international domain. This analogy will be examined here. In order for this to be successful it is useful to understand some key approaches to international relations. Here we will briefly discuss three such concepts—international scepticism, internationalism and cosmopolitanism.
