Introduction

The introduction explains why the four philosophers at the centre of this book—Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau and Kant—have been chosen and why it is necessary for their social contract theories to be expanded to cover the international domain. The structure of the book is then provided via a brief outline of the contents of each chapter.
