Assessment of the Potential of Complementarity Between Optical and Radar Remote Sensing for the Monitoring of Tropical Ecosystems in Central Africa: Case of the Hunting Area and Reserve of Bombo–Lumene and the Mangroves Marine Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Remote sensing is an essential tool for the observation and monitoring of tropical ecosystems. Commonly used optical sensors are unable to operate at night and during climatic disturbances. Hence the need to associate them with radars which operate whatever the weather (day, night, clouds and rain). We used Landsat7-8, SPOT4-5 and Sentinel2 optical images and PALSAR1 and Sentinel1 radar images After photo-interpretation and object-oriented classification, the results are very interesting and reveal the powerful potential of this complementarity for detection, observation and surveillance. In perspective, we propose to combine the radar images used in this study with other products: PALSAR2 (L band and full polarimetry), RADARSAT2 (C band, high resolution), RCM (compact polarization) and ICEYE (X band, very high spatial and temporal resolution) to address, in particular, in the coastal zone of the mouth of the Congo River, coastal erosion and the monitoring of pollution due to hydrocarbons.
