Land Productivity and Degradation Trend Monitoring Using Remote Sensing and GIS in Lake Chad Basin (LCB)

Tracking changes in total land productivity is an essential part of monitoring land transformations and alterations of the productive capacity of land typically associated with land degradation. Persistent declines in land productivity impact many terrestrial ecosystem services that form the basis for sustainable livelihoods of human communities. The Lake Chad Basin is one of the richest areas of flora but has rapidly reduced in size in the last century. There is need to undertake quantitative assessments and mapping of the basin’s degraded lands required by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 15.3.1. The study examines the trend in land productivity and degradation based on SDG 15.3.1 using Trends.Earth which relied on default datasets provided by MOD16A2, CHIRPS, AVHRR, MERRA 2 and Sentinel between 2003 and 2022. Land Area with improved productivity, stable productivity, degraded productivity, and area with no data for productivity are 16.05%, 74.93%, 9.00% and 0.02% respectively.
