The Entanglement of Periodicals and Travel in the Second Half of the Nineteenth Century
摘要
This chapter outlines the conceptual framework of the study. As a popular medium, Victorian periodicals performed cultural work for travel; they gave it a prominent and sustained presence in the period’s culture and literally tutored people to travel. The cultural agency of periodicals depended essentially on their specific media logic, whose features the chapter unravels: the communality and interactivity of periodicals, their specific temporality (presentness and periodicity), their juxtaposition of serial and single articles (that is, long and short forms), their miscellaneous content and their intermediality.
