Male breast reduction surgery is also practiced, addressing conditions like gynecomastia and adipomastia that cause breast size increase, leading to aesthetic and social discomfort. Gynecomastia, characterized by glandular tissue enlargement, is the primary reason men seek breast reduction. It can appear in different forms: nodular, dendritic, and diffuse. Adipomastia, on the other hand, involves an increase in fatty tissue without glandular changes, identified by its homogeneously fatty appearance on imaging and suitability for liposuction. Breast cancer is also a concern in male breast enlargement and is assessed differently. Preoperative imaging is crucial in determining the appropriate surgical approach, whether it is subcutaneous mastectomy for gynecomastia or liposuction for adipomastia. Imaging protocols typically include mammograms and ultrasounds to distinguish glandular from fatty enlargement and detect any underlying pathologies. Mammography is preferred for its ability to evaluate the overall distribution of gland/fat, essential for differentiating between types of gynecomastia and adipomastia. Ultrasound, while less effective for assessing distribution, is valuable for identifying specific pathologies and is used alongside mammography to ensure comprehensive preoperative planning. This imaging foundation is critical for guiding the surgical process, ensuring accurate diagnosis, and facilitating effective treatment of male breast enlargement.
