Romania

This chapter presents the fall of communism in Romania. Romania under Ceausṃescu rule became most dogmatic communist country under the cult of the individual. It was also the most “independent” country in the Eastern Bloc, with the dictator pulling national strings against the Soviets. In 1980s it brought disastrous results when Ceausṃescu decided to repay all the countries’ credits, thus destroying the economy. The revolt against the dictator was the region’s only bloody and violent uprising in 1989; however, power was taken over by another faction of communists. Ultimately, however, it brought a full pro-Western change in the country.
